Here’s a delicious French Onion Chicken Casserole recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 1 1/2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup French onion soup
  • 1/2 cup dry white wine (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 2 cups shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup crushed French bread crumbs
  • Fresh thyme, chopped (optional)

Instructions:

Step 1: Caramelize Onions (20 minutes)

  1. In a large skillet, cook sliced onions over medium-low heat, stirring occasionally.
  2. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute.
  3. Onions are caramelized when golden brown and fragrant.

Step 2: Prepare Chicken (10 minutes)

  1. In a separate skillet, cook chicken in butter until browned and cooked through.
  2. Season with salt, pepper, and paprika.

Step 3: Assemble Casserole (15 minutes)

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine cooked chicken, caramelized onions, French onion soup, and white wine (if using).
  3. In a separate bowl, mix Gruyère and cheddar cheese.
  4. In a greased 9×13-inch baking dish, layer:
    • Chicken and onion mixture
    • Cheese mixture
    • Repeat layers, ending with cheese on top
  5. Sprinkle crushed French bread crumbs and chopped thyme (if using).

Step 4: Bake and Serve (25-30 minutes)

  1. Bake casserole until golden brown and bubbly.
  2. Serve hot, garnished with chopped fresh thyme (optional).

Tips and Variations:

  • Use store-bought French onion soup or make your own.
  • Add diced bell peppers or mushrooms for extra flavor.
  • Substitute chicken with beef or pork.
  • Use different types of cheese, such as Swiss or Parmesan.
